Sizing & Measuring
Always measure the duct opening — the hole in the floor, wall, or ceiling — not the old cover. Order by that size and your new cover will be sized to fit. For the full measurement walkthrough, see our How to Measure guide.
We stock dozens of standard sizes from 2"×10" up to 12"×30" and beyond, with the most common being 4×10, 4×12, 6×10, and 6×12. If your size isn't listed, we make custom covers in any dimension — no minimum order. Browse sizes in our floor vent cover collection.
Common sizes — 4×10, 4×12, 6×10, 6×12 — are widely used in post-1960 homes, but many older or renovated homes have non-standard openings. Measure your duct before ordering; if it doesn't match a catalog size, custom sizing is available.
The duct size is the measurement of the opening you order by. The overall size is the finished dimensions of the cover itself, which is slightly larger — typically 1.25" bigger on each side — to overlap the surrounding surface. Product pages list both dimensions; check them if you have tight clearance.
Hinged air returns are ordered by filter size, not duct size — if your filter is 20"×20", order a 20"×20" return. This is the most common sizing mistake for returns. Our measuring guide covers returns, flush mount registers, and baseboard sizing in detail.
Products & Terminology
A register is a supply vent with a moveable damper — you can open and close it to control airflow. A grille is a fixed vent with no damper, used for air returns. An air return draws room air back to the HVAC system and does not supply conditioned air. If you want to control airflow, you need a register; if the vent is on your return system, you need a grille or return.

It depends on the material. Lightweight wood, steel, and aluminum floor registers can work as sidewall vents — they’re not load-bearing on a wall. Cast iron is usually too heavy for most wall installs. For ceiling use, the cover must be lightweight and ceiling-rated; cast iron should never go overhead. Madelyn Carter covers come with wall clips that hold the register in place and let you operate the damper. We also carry dedicated wall vent covers and ceiling vent covers suited to each application.
A flush mount register sits level with the floor surface rather than sitting on top of it, creating a seamless look where the wood grain of the cover appears continuous with the surrounding flooring. They are installed at the same time as new flooring and require a precise floor cutout. See all flush mount wood registers.
An air deflector is an accessory that attaches to a register and redirects the airflow away from furniture, curtains, or walls — useful when a vent is positioned directly below or behind something you don't want in the airstream. Browse our hardware and accessories for available options.
A baseboard register is a vent cover for a forced-air duct that runs along the baseboard — part of your HVAC system. A baseboard heater cover encloses an electric heating element and has no connection to ductwork. We carry both: baseboard registers and baseboard heater covers.
Ordering & Custom
Start on our Custom Vent Covers page — enter your duct measurements, choose your material and finish, and we'll send a quote within 24 hours. Complex orders with non-standard shapes include a CAD drawing for your approval before production begins.
Custom orders generally ship within 2–6 weeks depending on the level of customization; custom wood and resin orders typically run 2–4 weeks. Manufacturing begins within 24 hours of your order being placed, or once you approve the CAD drawing for complex orders. Lead times are listed on each custom product page.

Care & Maintenance
For a quick clean, vacuum with a brush attachment and wipe with a damp microfiber cloth. For a deep clean, remove the cover, soak it in warm soapy water, scrub gently, rinse, and dry completely before reinstalling. See our full guide: How to Clean Vent Covers.
Metal vent covers can be repainted using a spray paint formulated for metal — lightly sand the existing finish, apply a metal primer, then your top coat. Wood covers can be stained or painted before installation. Note that altering a finish after purchase makes the item non-returnable.
Wipe with a lightly damp cloth — do not soak wood in water as this can cause warping. For dust in the grille slats, use a soft dry brush. Reapply any oil or wax finish after cleaning to maintain the wood. Full material-specific guidance is on our cleaning page.
