A baseboard heater cover is a replacement housing for an electric baseboard heating unit — the long, low heaters found along the base of walls in many homes, particularly in the northeast and in older construction. Over time, the original metal covers dent, rust, or discolor. A replacement cover snaps or slides over the existing heating element to restore a clean appearance without replacing the heater itself. If your baseboard heaters look worn but still heat properly, a new cover is a fast, affordable upgrade.

These are two completely different products that are frequently confused. A baseboard heater cover encloses an electric heating element that runs along the wall — it has no connection to your home's ductwork. A baseboard register is a vent cover for a forced-air duct that happens to run along the baseboard. If your baseboard unit plugs in or is wired directly and produces heat on its own, you need a heater cover. Measure the total length of your existing heater unit from end to end, not including any end caps. Baseboard heater covers are sold in standard lengths — typically 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 feet — and can be cut to fit with a hacksaw or tin snips if needed. Also note the height and projection (depth from the wall) of your existing unit, as these dimensions need to match. Yes. Baseboarders covers are made from steel with a powder coat finish and can be repainted with a spray paint formulated for metal. If you want to match the cover to your wall color, lightly sand the surface, apply a metal primer, and then your top coat. The cover must be cool and the heater must be off during painting and drying. Standard colors include white and architectural finishes that blend with most wall colors out of the box.

No — when installed correctly, baseboard heater covers are designed to allow normal airflow through the unit. The Baseboarders system uses an open-bottom design that lets cool air enter at the floor, pass over the heating element, and rise naturally into the room. Do not block the bottom gap or the top outlet of the cover, as this will reduce heat output and could create a safety concern. As long as the cover is properly installed with clearance at the bottom and top, heat output is unaffected.
